Malcolm Leland McGuckin, Jr. grew up in Pasadena, California. He joined the Boy Scouts and built two soap-box race cars. He built model airplanes. He spent his summers camping in Maine.

He served as a pilot in the United States Marine Corps, in the 433 Bombing Squadron in the South Pacific. For his valor and achievements against enemy Japanese forces, he won the Distinguished Flying Cross.
