Growing up in Missouri, Russell moved to the Montana Territory when he was sixteen. While working on a cattle ranch one of his small watercolors was sent to the owner who displayed it in a shop window in Helena. Soon he was receiving commissions for his work and eventually became a world-famous painter, illustrator and sculptor.
