Born in England, Alan Lee has illustrated many books. He is particularly associated with the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and was one of the lead artists on the film versions of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Among other honors he is the recipient of the Kate Greenaway medal for Black Ships Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliff.
