Merle Simon Haas worked as a nurse’s aide for many years in New York. Her husband Robert K. Haas, co-founder of the Book of the Month Club, was a principal of the publisher Smith & Haas, later merged into Random House. He asked her to translate the Babar books into English, which initiated a long career as a French translator.
