When you go to a book page, we provide you with a great deal of information. The first four parts are the Title, Alternate Title, Cover Image, and Description.
Sometimes what is printed on the book cover is different than what is listed on the title page.
During certain historical eras it was common to use a very long title. Usually this long title consisted of two elements:
- A short title, followed by
- A longer phrase that explained more about the book
In general, however, the book is referred to by the shorter title. This is usually the title on the cover of the book, since the long title won't fit on the spine.
We use the short title in almost every case.
The Alternate Title can have three different meanings:
Meaning 1
There is the Title printed on the cover.
But there is also the title printed on the title page. It might be different than the title printed on the cover. If so, we consider that to be an Alternate Title.
Plus a title is often printed at top of the pages of the book. It night be different. If so, we consider that an Alternate Title.
Meaning 2
The subtitle, since we don't have room for (or want) a very long title.
Meaning 3
The Alternate title of the same text in different editions.
The example above has the title of "Peter and Wendy" by J. M. Barrie. But it is often published as "Peter Pan."
